Apple has opened app submissions for iPhone Duo ahead of the device’s availability on 23 October 2026. The company has also published new preparation guidance, developer labs, workshops, design resources and performance material. The main technical change is not a new app category. It is a new set of display shapes that can expose old assumptions in an existing iPhone app. Apple’s October developer announcement sets out the timetable and the available resources.
Apps built with the iOS 27 SDK can resize to use more of the inner display. Apps built with iOS 27.1 or later are designed to use the full display, with toolbars and tab bars arranged vertically below the status bar. Apple says apps built with iOS 26 SDK or earlier will still run, but may leave empty space or sit in a less suitable position on the outer display.
The question for a UAE app business is not whether the app launches. It is whether the interface still makes sense when the available space changes.

For a UAE retailer, delivery company, booking platform or service business, the immediate risk is a poor customer journey rather than a failed installation. A clipped hero image, a misplaced payment button or a menu that does not adapt can affect conversion and support workload.
This matters most for businesses with a customer-facing iPhone app and for UAE agencies maintaining apps for several clients. One update may need to cover more than one customer journey: browsing, search, checkout, account management and support. A layout that looks correct on a conventional phone can behave differently when the device folds or unfolds.
Apple specifically warns against hardcoded screen sizes, fixed orientation logic and assumptions based on device type or size class. That includes checks for known screen dimensions, relying on `UIScreen.main.bounds`, and treating a regular width as proof that the app is running on an iPad. These patterns may also affect apps that were not originally designed with flexible layouts in mind.
The sensible response is to inspect the app’s layout logic before commissioning a large redesign. If the app already uses responsive views and current SDKs, the work may be limited to testing and a few corrections. If it depends on fixed dimensions or orientation rules, the update may require more substantial development.
Apple’s preparation guide gives a useful sequence for an agency or internal team:
Apple provides an iPhone Duo simulator in Xcode 27.1. It also recommends the iOS resizable simulator in Device Hub and resizing iPhone Mirroring windows on macOS 27. The Duo simulator is intended to show the native experience, while the other tools are useful for finding layouts that fail at unusual widths.
A UAE agency does not need to wait for local customer demand before doing this work. It can take one active app, run the resizability review, and record the result as either a small compatibility update or a larger redesign task. That gives the owner a clearer scope than asking for a general “foldable phone update”.
Not every business needs a separate launch campaign or immediate feature work. If an app has low iPhone usage, limited screen complexity and no fixed-size layout code, the owner may reasonably monitor adoption and schedule testing in the next maintenance cycle.
The case for action is stronger where the app handles payments, bookings, delivery tracking or high-value customer accounts. In those cases, a display problem can interrupt a revenue-producing task. The cost of checking is also easier to control when the team starts with Apple’s diagnostic tools rather than redesigning every screen.
Apple has opened Group Labs on 13 and 15 October, and its preparation page lists workshops and further documentation. These are useful for teams that need clarification on platform behaviour before committing development time. Apple also recommends updating App Store product pages to show iPhone Duo support where that is relevant.
Paknology has a commercial interest if your UAE business needs an app review, responsive layout changes or a mobile app update. Its websites and mobile apps service is the relevant starting point for that work.
A cheaper or simpler option may be better if your app is small, already uses flexible layouts and your developer can run Apple’s tools in-house. In that case, ask for a focused compatibility check rather than commissioning a full rebuild. Before 23 October, have the current source code, SDK version, test account details and key customer journeys ready. If you want an external review or update, talk to us with those details.
