Should UAE Retailers Switch From React Native to Native Apps?

Shopify is moving major mobile apps from React Native to native Swift and Kotlin, using AI to reduce the cost of building for iOS and Android separately. UAE retailers should take note, but not rush into a rewrite.

Should UAE retailers switch from React Native?

Not yet. Shopify’s result is important evidence that AI-assisted native app development is becoming more practical, but it is not proof that every UAE retailer should abandon React Native or commission a full rebuild. The sensible move is to test the economics and performance of a specific app before changing the stack.

Shopify announced on 10 September 2026 that it is moving its mobile apps from React Native towards native Swift for iOS and Kotlin for Android. The company says the change follows improvements in coding agents, which reduced the previous disadvantage of implementing and maintaining features on two platforms. (shopify.engineering)

Why Shopify moved from React Native to native apps

Shopify used React Native from 2020 because one shared codebase reduced duplicated work, helped developers contribute across the stack and limited the effort needed to keep iOS and Android aligned. The company says React Native worked well, but its teams also spent significant time on performance work, foundational improvements, framework updates and external dependencies. (shopify.engineering)

The new approach is not simply asking an AI system to translate a codebase and pressing publish. Shopify built a workflow called Helix. It breaks the migration into small checkpoints, then requires tests, visual comparison, adversarial code review and human approval before work moves forward. Its architecture also separates business logic from the user interface so agents can test more of the application through command-line tools rather than relying only on slow simulator interaction. AI reduced the cost of building twice, but it did not remove the need to build and review twice.

What Shopify’s native Shop app achieved

Shopify’s Shop app was the first major migration. A small proof of concept used coding agents to recreate as much of the existing React Native iOS app as possible in SwiftUI during one week. It was not production-ready, but it showed that a close feature-by-feature migration was achievable. A core group of six engineers then built the native foundations and main journeys, with feature teams joining later to test edge cases and preserve analytics behaviour. (shopify.engineering)

Shopify says the finished native app went from proof of concept to publication in 12 weeks. Its testing compared startup time, stability, app size, build time and rendering performance. In the company’s published comparison, native startup was faster on both iOS and Android. Android’s release build was also substantially smaller, while iOS app size was broadly similar. Shopify further reported higher session stability and an Android release build time reduction of about 75 per cent. These are Shopify’s results on its own application, not a general benchmark for every retailer. (shopify.engineering)

What native app development means for UAE retailers

The commercial question for a UAE retailer is no longer simply “native costs too much”. That assumption deserves another look. If an app depends heavily on camera functions, push notifications, location, payments, complex animations, device integrations or demanding product feeds, native development may offer a clearer route to platform capabilities and first-party tooling. Shopify says native leaves fewer framework and dependency layers between the application and the operating system. (shopify.engineering)

That does not mean native is automatically cheaper. The company is explicit that iOS and Android still need separate implementations. The saving comes from AI-assisted translation, testing, review and parity work, supported by strong specifications and an existing product to use as a reference. A greenfield rebuild is therefore more attractive when the current app is already well documented, has reliable tests and has enough usage or technical friction to justify the work.

For a smaller retailer, a responsive ecommerce site or a focused cross-platform app may still be the simpler choice. Paknology’s websites and mobile apps service is relevant when the immediate need is to launch or improve a customer-facing digital channel, not necessarily to fund a ground-up native rewrite.

Should UAE retailers commission a native app rebuild?

Not on the strength of Shopify’s headline alone. Start with an audit of the current app: crash and stability data, startup time, screen-level performance, app size, release cycle, native integrations and the cost of keeping both platforms aligned.

Then run a bounded proof of concept. Pick one representative journey, such as browsing, search, checkout or loyalty. Rebuild it in SwiftUI and Jetpack Compose with the same acceptance criteria. Compare the result with the existing implementation for speed, reliability, accessibility, analytics events and engineering effort. Shopify’s own experience shows that an existing implementation gives coding agents useful context, but it also shows that generated code still needs experienced native review. (shopify.engineering)

If the proof of concept does not show a clear improvement, stay with the current stack and improve the highest-value bottlenecks. If it does, plan a staged migration rather than replacing a live retail app in one move. Shopify chose a greenfield rebuild for Shop, but its decision was based on its scale, internal engineering capability and ability to create specialised tooling. Those conditions may not exist in a smaller UAE business.

Where Paknology fits in a native app decision

Paknology has a commercial interest where this decision leads to a website or mobile app project, or where a retailer needs related ecommerce, ERP and automation work. A cheaper or simpler option will serve you better if your current problem is weak product data, slow operations or an unclear customer journey rather than the mobile framework itself.

For now, document the current app, choose one high-value journey and test native development before approving a full rebuild. If you need that project scoped, start with the websites and mobile apps service.
